This was a difficult census record to find as McCaslin was transcribed poorly as McCarline
In the 1870 US Federal Census for Topeka, Shawnee, Kansas, 39-year old Allen F McCaslin and his 38-year old wife Mary (Alexander) McCaslin have in their household 16-year old James, 12-year old Margaret E, 6-year old Rebecca F, 5-year old George L and 1-year old Jessie. the unnamed baby girl is missing and presumed to have died. All the children were born in Indiana except Jessie who was born in Kansas. This would indicate that the family moved to Kansas between 1866 and 1869.
In the 1875 Kansas State Census for Topeka, Shawnee, Kansas, 45-year old farmer A.F.[Allen F] McCaslin has $10,000 worth of real estate and $800 worth of personal property. He and his 44-year old wife M.R. [Mary R Alexander] McCaslin have in their household their children, J.T. [James T], 17-year old M.E [Margaret E], 12-year old F [Rebecca Frances], 10-year old G.L. [George Lincoln] and 6-year old J.A. [Jessie].
In the 1880 US Federal Census for Topeka, Shawnee, Kansas, 46-year old [he should be 48] A F McCaslin and his 46-year old [she should be 48] wife Mary (Alexander) McCaslin have in their household 26-year old James (cigar dealer with a cold the day the census taker arrived), 21-year old Margret [Margaret E] whose profession is given as "printer", 16-year old Fannie [Rebecca F], 15-year old Lincoln [George L] who is listed as a paper carrier, and 11-year old Jessie. This census record was hard to find as McCaslin is transcribed as Mc Leason.
On 8 Dec 1894, 40-year old James T McCaslin and Elizabeth R [Smith-Miller] O'Neil were married in Holton, Jackson, Kansas. Both were of Hoyt, Kansas.
In the 1895 Kansas State Census for Douglas, Jackson, Kansas, 41-year old farmer J.T. [James T] McCaslin has married 32-year old widow Elizabeth O'Neill [Smith-Miller, recorded as L.R.] after the death of his first wife. They have in their household the children from his first marriage, 11-year old M.M. [Mary], 9-year old Hattie and 2-year old P.A. [Peter], and her son, 11-year old D.N. O'Neill
In the 1900 US Federal Census for Douglas, Jackson, Kansas 46-year old Indiana-born farmer James T and his 37-year old Missouri-born wife Rebecca E [Elizabeth Rebecca Smith Miller O'Neil] McCaslin have been married 18 years [sic, they've been married 5-1/2 years] and have had seven children [sic}. James and Elizabeth Rebecca's four Kansas-born children are 4-year old twins James D and Henry C, 2-year old Robert N, and new born Carrie A [Adeleide]. The three older children are from James's previous marriage to Jenny Smith and are 16-year old Missouri-born Mary M, 14-year old Missouri-born Hattie M and 7-year old Kansas-born Peter A (whose birth year is incorrectly recorded as 1883). Mary, Hattie and Peter have attended school in the past year, Mary and Hattie for eight months and Peter for seven. James T, Elizabeth Rebecca, Mary and Hattie can read, write and speak English. James owns the land he is farming, free of mortgage. James T's father was born in Indiana and his mother in Tennessee, Elizabeth Rebecca's father was born in Indiana and her mother in Missouri. The children's father was born in Indiana and either of their mothers in Missouri.
In the 1905 Kansas State Census for Douglas, Jackson, Kansas, 51-year old farmer J.T [James T] McCaslin owns his farm free of mortgage. He and his second wife, 42-year old L.R [Elizabeth Smith-Miller O'Neill] McCaslin have in their household his son from his first marriage 12-year old P.A. [Peter A], and their children, 9-year old twins H.C [Henry] and J.L. [James], 7-year old R.N. [Robert] and 5-year old C.A [Adeleide].
In 1910, 56-year old twice married James T McCaslin is recorded in two places in the census. Once, on 23 April in Douglas, Jackson, Kansas where James T is a farmer who owns his farm. Living with him are his son by his first wife Jennie Smith 17-year old Peter A, his son by his second wife Elizabeth O'Neill 12-year old Robert N, his oldest daughter by his first wife 26-year old Mary M [McCaslin] Barnes and her 1-year 4-month old daughter Eula. Mary has been married for two years and has only the one child. Neither James' wife Elizabeth nor Mary's husband Lawrence are recorded in the household.
The second time James was recorded on the 1910 census was on 4 May in Justice, Travis, Texas, where James has a "general farm" which he owns. He and his 48-year old wife Elizabeth have been married 16 years and Elizabeth has borne five children and five are living. Four of these children are in their household, the 14-year old twns James and Henry, 12-year old Robert who was recorded on the April census in Kansas, and 10-year old Adlade [Adelaide]. Elizabeth's fifth child, D.N O'Neill is not listed in this household.

[Elizabeth R Smith-Miller O'Neill] McCaslin have in their family their children, 19-year old twins, Henry C and James L, 17-year old Robert N, and 14-year old Adalad [Adalaide]. James owns his farm free of mortgage.
Apparently James considered moving his farming to a new state. This doesn't seem to have lasted as in the 1915 Kansas State Census for Cedar, Jackson, Kansas, shows the return of this family to Kansas. Sixty one-year old farmer J.T. [James T.] and his 52-year old wife L. R. [Elizabeth R Smith-Miller O'Neill] McCaslin have in their family their children, 19-year old twins, Henry C and James L, 17-year old Robert N, and 14-year old Adalad [Adalaide]. James owns his farm free of mortgage.
Elizabeth died 12 Oct 1915 and was buried in the Hoyt Cemetery in Douglas, Jackson, Kansas.
And in the 1920 US Federal Census shows that 65-year old J.T. [James T] McCaslin has married a third wife, 45-year old Hallie [maiden name unknown] and has returned to Douglas, Jackson, Kansas. James is renting his acreage to his son 26-year old farmer P.A. [Peter Allen] McCaslin. Peter and his family are living either in the same house or an adjacent one.
In the 1925 Kansas State Census for Douglas, Jackson, Kansas, 32-year old Kansas-born farmer Peter McCaslin is still renting farm land from his farmer father 71-year old Indiana-born J.F. [sic] [James Thomas] McCaslin who is living next door with his third wife, 50-year old Missouri-born Hallie [maiden name unknown]. Peter and his wife 30-year old Texas-born B.E. [Bettie E Payton] McCaslin have in their household their Kansas-born children, 9-year old Durell, 6-year old Jean, 3-year old J.M. [Jennie M] and 1-year old James A. Peter, Bettie, Durell and Jean can read, write and speak English. Durell and Jean are attending school.
In the 1930 US Federal Census for Douglas, Jackson, Kansas, 76-year old farmer James T McCaslin owns the acreage he is farming. He and his third wife 56-year old Hallie A are the only people in their household.
